Brings back the old days on Harry DeFrates’ feedlot. I don’t appreciate feedlots any more, for many reasons, but I still like the cows.

I used to be walking around in the lot, going from trough to trough, and I’d hear the thunder of hooves behind me. They’d stop, and I’d turn around to see a steer looking up ay me, his front feet splayed out and his butt up in the air, in the classic quadruped’s invitation to play. I’d give him a pat, and maybe a hug, but I had no idea what this half-ton horned animal’s idea of “play” was, so I’d do little more than that.
Makes me think twice about eating a hamburger.
